Riot’s Changes and What’s Next

Dear Gaming Community, We want to share some important updates about the changes happening at Riot Games. We understand that change can be unsettling, and we want to be transparent about how it will impact you and the larger Riot community. Today’s decisions are crucial for Riot’s future, and we want to stress that these changes are not just about meeting financial goals but are necessary for the long-term health of our company.

Over the years, Riot Games has taken on various projects without a clear strategy. The changes we are making now aim to focus our efforts on areas that have the most impact on your gaming experience while reducing investment in less impactful endeavors.

Unfortunately, this means we will be reducing approximately 530 roles globally, affecting around 11% of Rioters, with the most significant impact on teams outside of core development. We understand that these changes affect real people and families, and we approach these decisions with respect and sensitivity.

Looking ahead, we are refocusing on our core live games – League of Legends, VALORANT, Teamfight Tactics, and Wild Rift. Our commitment to these games is stronger than ever, with a focus on delivering content, features, and updates that directly respond to your needs and desires. We plan to integrate esports, music, and entertainment more tightly with our games, aiming for a seamless blend that enhances the overall player experience.

We want to assure you that our strategy involves quality over quantity. We will prioritize delivering experiences that you can be proud of, and that require the financial flexibility to take the time necessary for excellence. While occasional setbacks may still happen, we want them to be for the right reasons, not due to rushed projects.

In terms of upcoming projects, we have exciting developments, such as Project L, which is making great progress, and Arcane Season 2 set for November 2024. We are also exploring more opportunities for players to try out Project L, so stay tuned for updates later this year.

We acknowledge the impact on Legends of Runeterra (LoR) and Riot Forge. To ensure the sustainability of LoR, we are making adjustments, particularly focusing on The Path of Champions. Riot Forge, after the release of Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story, will conclude new game development. This decision allows us to redirect efforts to our internal projects and ambitions.

As we move forward, we are committed to crafting meaningful and memorable experiences with games at the center of everything we do. Change may bring uncertainty, but it also presents opportunities for growth and innovation. We appreciate your ongoing support, and we’re excited to continue this journey together.
