On January 26, India marks Republic Day, celebrating the adoption of its Constitution in 1950. People from all corners of the nation eagerly anticipate a day filled with patriotic fervor, cultural showcases, and vibrant parades showcasing our rich diversity and unity.

Being part of the Republic Day parade is a cherished tradition, and this year promises a spectacular display with 100 skilled female artisans showcasing traditional Indian musical instruments. Notably, there will be an all-female Tri-Service contingent, making history in Republic Day celebrations.

REPUBLIC DAY 2024: UNVEILING THE MEANING BEHIND INDIA’S CELEBRATION ON JANUARY 26

After gaining independence on August 15, 1947, India faced the need for a constitution. To address this, a Drafting Committee led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was formed on August 29, 1947.

By November 4, 1947, a finalized draft of the Constitution reached the Constituent Assembly. Following extensive discussions, the Assembly officially adopted the Constitution on January 24, 1950.

On this historic day, 308 Assembly members signed two copies of the text—one in Hindi and the other in English—reaffirming India’s status as a sovereign republic.

Replacing the British Colonial Government’s India Act of 1935, the Constitution became the foundational legal document. The Assembly chose January 26 as the day to promulgate this document, a day synonymous with national pride.
