They want to remind everyone to talk about their organ donation wishes with family. Sue faced health challenges from a young age and needed dialysis by 25. When she got her mom’s kidney, she hoped for just five more years. But thanks to the NHS, her mom, and good genes, she’s been healthy for 50 years.
South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust celebrated both Sue and Robert. Robert had his operation in 1974, with his brother John as the donor. The surgery took place at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Despite the risks at the time, the operation was successful.
After 50 years, Robert wanted a check-up, leading to a celebration by the renal unit team. Consultant Nephrologist James Andrews called it a “remarkable milestone” and thanked Robert’s brother for the life-changing gift.
Sue encourages potential donors, saying, “If your loved ones are thinking of donating, if the circumstances are right, do it.” Dr. Rachel Davison supports this message, urging people to have open conversations about their wishes to potentially save lives through organ donation.
