An American adult film actor has upset people by going to Iran, even though there are dangers like getting arrested and facing the death penalty.
Whitney Wright, who is 32 years old, recorded a video in Tehran where she explored the deserted US embassy, now transformed into a museum expressing anti-American sentiments.
“On social media, Wright, also known as Brittni Rayne Whittington, mentioned that she felt compelled to visit the embassy where Iranian students held staff members hostage for 444 days after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.”
“I’m posting pictures of rare museum items that people usually don’t get to see,” wrote Wright from Oklahoma on Instagram in a post that has been removed. “I want to clarify that this doesn’t mean I support the government.”
She recorded videos of herself in the city of Tehran, Iran, even though her involvement in adult content could theoretically expose her to criminal charges, including the possibility of facing the death penalty.
Wright shared pictures from her trip, including one where she wore a headscarf and Traditional clothing, as mandated by Iranian law. The photo showed her standing beside a lowered US flag at the former embassy.
On Monday, the actress shared on her Instagram story that she’s not fully aware of everything mentioned here. However, she wanted to let everyone know that she has left Iran and is currently in a different place.
She is visiting after Iran jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner and women’s rights advocate Narges Mohammadi. There are also concerns about Iran’s compulsory headscarf rule and countrywide demonstrations following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody two years ago.
Backlash to visit
Masih Alinejad, a US-based activist who experienced threats from Iran, criticized Wright for her trip and for reportedly saying, “If you follow the law, you’ll be safe in Iran.”
On X, she expressed, “Iranian women refuse to follow an unfair law. Just like Rosa Parks stood up against racist laws in America and became a symbol of resistance.”
“We, Iranian women, aspire to follow the example of Rosa Parks rather than Whitney Wright. It’s important to note that the real instigators of conflict are the agents of the Islamic Republic, who may harm you for staying true to yourself.”
Iranian actor Setareh Pesiani expressed her frustration on Instagram, questioning the Unfairness of policies. She pointed out, “People in this country face various punishments for not wearing the hijab, but a porn actress is allowed to visit as a tourist. How does that make sense?”
